Hole In One!

The 4th hole in one of the season for a Murrayshall Lady member occurred on Thursday, September 5th during the first September Medal. Vice -Captain Nicola Gilmore watched in amazement as her well hit 7 iron rose high into the air, landed on the green at the 4th and rolled steadily up to the flag pin before dropping into the cup. The shrieks of delight could apparently be heard all the way to Luncarty!

Murrayshall Ladies Week-End Away

On Saturday August 31st 15 ladies made their way to Peebles for a week-end of good golf and good fun.

On Saturday 31st the ladies played the Peebles Cardrona setting off on their expedition at 1.00pm! And it was indeed an expedition, taking well over 5 hours to complete the round!! Conditions were tough and the weather was variable but a great time was had by all.
The photographs below show a sample of the intrepid group limbering up at the start of their round!

Our group played a tri-am competition and the results were as follows:

1st: Aileen Priestly, Isabel Meddicks & Meg Ritchie TOTAL 147
2nd: Jean Jasper, Marysia Whittet & Angela Beale TOTAL 148
3rd: Rhoda Evans, Libby Rodger & Judith Carmichael TOTAL 150
4th: Linda Gray, Katherine Chambers & Nicola Gilmore TOTAL 161
5th: Carol Tweedie, Betty Neilson & Margaret Mauchline TOTAL 169

As mentioned earlier the conditions were somewhat challenging and unfortunately Isabel's poor umbrella succumbed somewhat to the elements!!

Everyone did however enjoy a lovely meal and superb accommodation at the Cardrona that evening and wistful stories of what could have been were duly exchanged! (That also included the sack full of balls Linda and Nicola lost between them!!)

On Sunday September 1st our slightly larger group of 17 ladies played Peebles GC again in challenging weather conditions. On this day we played a team Stableford competition and all we were looking for was the best nest score at each hole - couldn't have been easier really could it?!!!

The top 3 placed teams were as follows:

1st: Libby Rodger, Katherine Chambers & Isabel Meddicks TOTAL Points 42
2nd: Jean Jasper, Aileen Priestley & Margaret Mauchline TOTAL Points 41
3rd: Nicola Gilmore, Carol Tweedie & Angela Beale TOTAL Points 41

Our week-end concluded with lovely food in the Peebles GC clubhouse followed by a short prize giving.

The final two prizes of the week-end were awarded as follows:
  • The Anorexic golfer award - for outstanding performance - Jean Jasper
  • Centenary Jean award - for great effort in the face of adversity - Rhoda Evans
We all look forward to next year's outing and whatever challenges that throws up!

Club Championship Finals

The finals of the Ladies Club Championships were played this morning over the Murrayshall course.

The photograph shows Daphne, Katrina, Aileen and Jean prior to their matches on the first tee.

Aileen Priestley took on Daphne Brill in the final of the Dow competition to decide the winner of the scratch competition.
The competition was tense with the game ebbing and flowing throughout, and this is the way it remained to the 18th hole where Daphne won by two holes.
Congratulations to Daphne who retains the title for a second consecutive year.

In the Jessie Valentine final Katrina Irvine took on Jean McEwan. These two ladies again fought a very close match. At the 17th hole Jean was 1 up and Katrina sank a tremendous putt at the 18th to square the match. The two ladies made their way back to the first tee to play their first extra hole. Two strong drives from Katrina and Jean signalled the start of the rain and out came the umbrellas! Nevertheless our intrepid competitors braved it out and at this first extra hole Katrina again sank another marvellous putt to win the match. Our congratulations go to Katrina on her win.

Both matches were followed keenly by a group of lady members and our thanks go to them for their unstinting support. We also wish to congratulate Aileen and Jean on their tremendous achievement in reaching their respective finals.

So, that concludes the Club Championships for another year. We look forward to great golf again next season.

Fabulous net 62 for Angela Beale

Picture this.....

Having had glorious hot, sunny and dry weather for longer than anyone can possibly imagine, our enthusiastic lady members headed off for their weekly Thursday golf competition on July 25th. The weather Gods alas were not on their side and instead the heavens did their best to give everyone and everything a jolly good soaking. So, from our initially large playing group only a few hardy souls decided they were up for the challenge and headed off, waterproofs to the fore. The rest I might add retired for coffee!

Now, among this very small but perfectly formed group, a score to die for was steadily being put together by none other than Mrs Angela Beale. In Angela's own words the golfing gods were with her on Thursday and everything just fell into place. At the 8th hole a further two ladies succumbed to the conditions but Angela and her playing partner Fay battled on regardless. At the conclusion of her round Angela had amassed 45 Stableford points and scored a net 62!

A fabulous score and very well deserved. Angela's handicap was cut from 23 to 20 as a result.

Congratulations Angela - and all tips on how to put together such a round would be most readily received by the author!

Hole In One Success For Irene Austin

Holes in one are becoming something of a regular occurrence here at Murrayshall!
On Saturday, July 6th Irene was playing in a Texas scramble on the Murrayshall course. At the 4th hole she took her position on the tee and hit a beautiful shot over the infamous water. Imagine her shock then as she left the tee - without a backwards glance and her team colleagues began shrieking in excitement as the ball made its way along the green and to the hole before eventually disappearing from sight.

And the shame of it? Irene didn't even see it go in the hole!

Our congratulations go to Irene on this hole in one achievement.

For those who played in the competition there was Pimms on the lawn in the glorious sunshine.

Cheers Irene!

Irene was subsequently presented with the hole in one trophy and the photograph shows Irene receiving her award with a bottle of champagne from Vice Captain, Nicola Gilmore.

Murrayshall Ladies Outing To Braehead

July 4th dawned damp but with the prospect of better weather perhaps to come. So with this thought in mind 20 intrepid lady golfers wended their way to Braehead Golf Club near Alloa. We left Perth in glorious sunshine and headed towards the threatening clouds of the central belt! Clouds being as they are they didn't just threaten - they performed right on cue! Nevertheless, we arrived at Braehead to fair conditions and the prospect that in fact things might just clear up for us.
10 pairs of ladies were entered in a greensomes competition and below there are some photographs of the day.

It was all smiles at the start as some of these photographs illustrate but as with any round of golf you never quite know what might be in front of you!
For some that meant a jaunt into the trees!!!

And for others it was a case of "needs must as the devil drives!!" Ouch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Nevertheless the smiles in the clubhouse afterwards proved how enjoyable the day had been for everyone...

Only one pair managed a magic two on the day and that accolade went to Angela and Elaine. Well done ladies!

The winners of our competition on the day were Euphan and Linda who had a fantastic net 72. This fabulous score also earned the girls second place in the Braehead greensomes handicap competition and the girls won fabulous jewellery as their prize. Well done girls!

So that's it for another year. Our thanks go to the ladies committee at Braehead for their hospitality and to Katherine Chambers of our ladies committee whose organisational skills made the day the success it was.

Here's to next year!

Double Hole In one for Murrayshall Lady Member Jean McEwan!

How many of us can but dream of achieving a hole in one - all I am sure as we eye up the short Par 3 facing us during each round we play!

Jean McEwan achieved an amazing double recently at the same hole and within a three week period!

Jean was playing Murrayshall Ladies Invitation day on Monday, May 13th when at the 18th hole she hit her last tee shot of the day and scored a tremendous hole in one much to the delight of her guest and playing partners!

Some three weeks later while playing in a preliminary round of the Summer Trophy, Jean once again stepped up on the 18th tee, lined herself up and swung her club. To the astonishment of her playing partners (and Jean herself!) the beautifully executed shot soared through the air, landed on the green and rolled right up to the hole before disappearing from sight! An amazing second hole in one!

We send our heartfelt congratulations to Jean for this amazing achievement - I am sure you are all glad you haven't had to pay for Jean's bar bill!

The photograph below shows Jean receiving the hole in one award from Vice-Captain Nicola Gilmore.

Murrayshall Ladies Open Competition Result

June 6th dawned a glorious sunny day and one we shall remember for many years to come - the day of our 2013 Murrayshall Ladies Open.

How often have we been blessed with such fabulous conditions? Despite the excellent conditions overhead the course proved more of a challenge and low scoring proved difficult to come by for the 66 ladies who took part on the day!

Visitors CSS was 74
Home CSS was 72

Nevertheless some excellent scores were returned and they were as follows:

LOWEST GROSS SCORE

  1. Eilidh Watson (Muckhart) - gross 77

  2. Diane Todd (Dunning) - net 69

Here's to next year - we look forward to welcoming you all at Murrayshall!
